As you can see, this is an old issue. Before the BLM got involved, conditions were worse for the horses. But now the agengy is in a tight place. In order to maintain the herd numbers at sustainable levels, somebody has to adopt them. If they can't find enough places for the horses, they have to be euthanised. It is sad, but compare that to the numbers of cats and dogs euthanised every year.
Rocky Mountain National Park has too many elk. They are overgrazing to the point of hurting the ecosystem in which they live. Efforts at relocating have not kept up with the problem and serious consideration is being given to open the park up for limited hunting. The US Air Force Academy, 18,000 acres of open woodland, has a serious deer over-population problem. They have turned to hunting in the past few years to control the population.
When we kill off all the predators, we have to take their place.
