My Dad was a big SA supporter

He hated the Red Cross and claimed the SA was a much more involved and caring org.

I'm not sure. His record of being right is spotty but I can appreciate some of his opinions of the RC.

My most vivid memory of the SA is a particular bell ringer that worked the same location in my town for 20-30 years and had one of the worst cases of BO imaginable.
