I think in the US we get chauvanistic idea that everyone in the world should want and support the US agenda. We forget they have their own agendas, and in some ways could give a rip about the US.
For example, the drug growing regions of the world are supported by the US market. The options for their peasants is grow drugs for the American market or starve. Or nearly starve. Responding to market conditions they make their own economically efficient solutions. Our agenda is for them to quit growing. Mexico's Fox had the effrontery to suggest the US stop buying the stuff and the problem would go away.
To expect Pakistan to do more against the Taliban and/or al-Qaeda is to expect Pakistan to turn against some of their own. It's understandable the US wants Pakistan to protect the US by killing its' citizens, and it's understandable large segments of the Paks resist.
(And the bottom line is that Afghanistan will not be conquered. Ma Bowser was there for 3 years, '74 - '77, and travellers even then did NOT get caught overnight in the countryside. At night the countryside and it's inhabitants belong to the lawless. Any war there is lost unless you have enough boots on the ground to protect every village, hamlet and road crossing.)
