active fault movement needed?

While I didn't see the press conference, I understand that one presenter said they expected some type of movement - faulting, newly developing cracks - would be needed for subsurface liquid water to reach new areas and produce methane. The unstated implication was that inactive geology that's been seen is evidence against this hypothesis for the methane.
