A perfect example this very day. I have an uninsured neighbor that has had some kind of virus. She went to my wifes Doctor and had to pay $100.00 in advance to be looked at.
With insurance, the Doctor would have been paid in the neighborhood of 40.00 bucks for a routine visit with 10.00 -15.00 coming from the patient.
Free market clinics where routine visits would be handled by CNP or less would probably offer competent routine care for the 10.00-15.00. Complex diagnostic would be hundreds and not thousands. It is the impossible cost of routine care that is the issue. Critical care is actually easier once it is diagnosed.
Unfortunately it isn't gonna happen, but something must happen to make routine care available to the uninsured.
