There is also a difference between people who slam airliners into office buildings and people who smoke joints. Getting all uptight against the dubious threat of drugs is the problem. Putting pot smokers into jail is absurd.
The most important figure in any health matter is mortality. How many people die in the USA each year from drug abuse, discounting alcohol and tobacco? Not very many.
Next, there is morbidity. How much are drug users incapacitated? How long does this last. What is the economic cost? How do these compare with the costs from alcohol and tobacco?
I think that the unreasonable fear of drugs is at the heart of the problem. Also, the absurd idea that drugs can somehow be removed from the market place is an utter delusion. Prohibition only INCREASES drug use.
Alcohol use went UP during the period of the Prohibition Amendment, and went down afterward. That should mean something, and it does.
