Well, with my thus-far fairly limited experience, using Ubuntu with the Gnome interface (included in the install) is largely indistinguishable from using Windows. Firefox is included in the install and a number of other browsers are freely available online, as is a great deal of very sophisticated software. IMO, the last couple of years have brought a huge improvement in Linux usability, especially for those familiar with Windows.
The CLI becomes important for developers. One of the knocks against using a "Unixy" language (Ruby, PHP, Python, etc) on Windows is that there are some important command line utilities that haven't been ported to Windows.
Again though, all of my Linux experience has been with Ubuntu. I have to bow to ET's wisdom when it comes to Linux in general.
