If you read the article, the vast majority of those injuries are things like concussions, and most of them heal without problems. The real number of issue is the 45,000 - 90,000 with lasting symptoms that is mentioned.
As an aside, in the United States, there are something like 300,000 concussions per year just from high school and college football alone.
