The rabid opposition to any form of state medical assistance

arises primarily because people who can afford medical insurance are furious that their tax dollars are subsidizing the medical care of those who can't.

Nobody likes to pay for services to others that they have to purchase for themselves, but that is the whole point of living in a community, a society, a nation. We owe it to those who can't pay their own way because it is the right thing to do, the decent thing to do, the honorable and patriotic thing to do. And we also owe it to others because we all benefit from what the society gives us, whether it be an education, police, court and fire protection, the defense of the nation, the construction of roads and bridges (even if we don't own a car!), the operation of the Coast guard (even if we don't own a yacht), and the aviation agencies even if we have never flown. We pay school taxes even if our kids are grown up, even if we never had kids. Society is filled with bennies we feel entitled to simply because we can afford the price of admission. Well, it is also filled with obligations and responsibilities, and those who feel they owe none to the rest of us I have no use for. They are the parasites and freeloaders. To reject that simple sense of patriotic obligation and duty is offensive.

Now there is room for debate and compromise, and it is perfectly reasonable to demand efficiency and honesty. But in a society where the taxes of the apartment renter help pay the flood insurance of those who can afford waterfront property, to deny life saving medical care to anyone, and especially to the aged and children, is totally unacceptable. It is an outrage. How can we we still be arguing this?
