There is no "rabid opposition to any form of state medical assistance" being discussed in this issue, here or anywhere else.
If anything, the irrational fixation is the insistence of some parties that all medical care should consist of nothing but state assistance, and nothing else is acceptable. The premise that the private sector should be erased from any solution is what actually paralyzes "debate and compromise," and evades the critical and inescapable issues that massive government spending in this area creates.
There's a hell of a lot of open field space between Ayn Rand and Bernie Sanders. I don't know why nobody wants to be there.
Interesting fact: no country on Earth spends more government money per capita on health care than the United States.
