The "sick" people he was talking about were people with pre-existing conditions who must be covered under the current insurance model, and this louses up the premiums for everyone else. Normal insurance policies don't cover pre-existing conditions (buying fire insurance for a burning building), so the insurance model works.

Maybe you missed the part where Ryan proposed directly subsidizing people with pre-existing conditions (like they used to do in state high-risk pools) so they could be lifted out of the larger pool and so drastically lower premium costs for everyone else. You certainly must have seen this part--it came right after the quote you list.

As for your links, you really need to read past the headlines.

Nothing in the Canada article lays the survival rate solely at the feet of their insurance system. Availability of transplants and diet seem to be just as important. And Canada does worse on cancer. So?

And nothing in the coal miner article says the GOP is responsible for the miners' benefit losses. The article blames the recession, and the reduced demand for coal. In fact the people fighting to keep the benefits come from both parties.
