I honestly don't know for sure, but blue mud has been used for decoration by various peoples including some American indian tribes. I suspect it has more to do with natural availability and the way it looked more than any significants of the color.
In other words, the mud was available in a natural state and did not have to be pigmented by the makeup experts of that time, and it looked good, damn good. :)
