I had a friend who was a Marine, and he related this little anecdote from his Parris Island boot camp. The Drill Instructor would often take the platoon on night exercises. He would then appoint one of the recruits as temporay platoon leader and disappear into the bush, leaving them to find their way back to the barracks.
Invariably, during the march, the DI would suddenly attack, usually by falling out of a tree, and beat the hell out of the unfortunate boot he happened to land on top of.
After several of these ambushes, my friend was appointed interim DI, and after a few minutes' march, soon after the DI vanished, he got an idea. He ordered his platoon to "fix bayonets", and then continued the march. A few minutes later, as they walked under a great oak tree, they heard a voice coming out of the branches over their heads,
"You're thinking, scuz."
