Relationhips ARE the most difficult, trying situations in life, next to job loss and cancer IF they go wrong. The emotional trauma and turmoil just don't seem worth it.
Some people get lucky and find a real FRIEND, and build a life. But there are so many people, who (when they get to know each other) and no matter how much they love each other, just can't see eye to eye. Or compromise. Or let things go.
I have a lifetime of relationships to look back on. One marriage. I doubt if I'd get married again, although the dreamer in me wants a man I can settle down with and make deliriously happy. I think the current culture works against that. People have become selfish and are willing to see what's right around the corner, and others like to tempt fate until it;s too late.
Some are only loking at security and what the other person has to offer.
To some degree, I envy my happily married friends. I know it's no picnic but they have someone there to go to bat for them, somene to chat or argue with, someone to share their meals with. Their homes are warmer places.
