The innocent are published along with the guilty, and conditions get worse for everybody. Eventually, a new boss, or class of bosses eerily similar to the deposed ones, arises, and everybody takes ten steps backwards. It takes a generation or longer before things get better.

We know of 4 great revolutions in recent history, the English (which gave us Crowmwell and the Protectorate), the French (which gave us the Terror), the Russian (which gave us Stalin) and the the Chinese (which gave us Mao). The American Revolution really wasn't a revolution at all, the colonists didn't want to change anything, they just wanted their old rights and freedoms back.
