re: "Sessile hermaphroditic colonial polyps"

When you consider the blinding complexity and dazzling wonder of the biological world as revealed even by our primitive, provincial science; the characteristics of the ethereal and spiritual beings we postulate simply pale in comparison. To put it another way, the living world we sea thriving in a drop of pond water or a spoonful of soil far exceeds in overwhelming complexity and sheer beauty all the supernatural speculations of our priests and shamans.

I'm not scoffing, or ridiculing anyone's belief system, and I hate to come across as a dry, stuffy scientist incapable of appreciating the potential universe of supernatural reality. I also recognize that that supernatural reality may indeed exist, perhaps in some form I cannot even visualize. It's just that I can see more wonder in the chemical machinery of the simplest microbe than has been shown to me in the entire pantheon of gods and spirits and demons and the denizens of other planes of existence. The real world wins the Oscar every time.
