Someone said our economy is a big ship and slow to turn. We are either sailing towards a never ending sunset or, the world is actually flat and we're close to going over the edge.
To say with glee and confidence that deficit spending is the way to go is a bit of blind optimism. It’s the same type of optimism people showed when assuming adjustable rate mortgages- “you’ll be able to pay the higher rate in the future because your income will go upâ€. How’d that work out?
Should we raise/lower taxes?
No. We need a fair and simple tax plan that’s written in stone. It doesn’t do much good to have policy makers chasing the pendulum. Consumers, businesses and corporations have to base their decisions and actions on variables. A concrete tax structure would remove a variable that only amps up the business cycle.
Deficit spending might be a useful tool in combating downturns but it should be used with restraint.
Aside: The co. I work for spent $750,000 on new equipment in 2007 to avoid a tax increase in 2008. Many companies did the same. Most of that equipment has been sitting idle for the last six months.
