re: Obama going after offshore tax havens

The corporations are trying to set up their own economy, one that doesn't include the rest of us. They'll gladly sell to us, or borrow from us, or loan someone else's money to us, but they feel no obligation to hire us, and they don't want to pay taxes on the profits either. And if they had their way, they'd have us finance the whole thing with tax subsidies, too. If they can't import workers from abroad that will be willing to do the work cheaper than Americans, then they'll export the jobs overseas and find workers there who will do the work cheaper than Americans.

What you have to keep in mind is that these are not necessarily the crimes of evil men, they are the inevitable consequences of the perverse, non-productive ecology of finance that has evolved under modern super-capitalism. The system no longer functions as a means of managing consumption and production through the interaction of labor and capital and the administration of resources. It has become an entity all its own, feeding on financial abstractions and intangibles, with its own needs and motivations and which services its own requirements at the expense of the society which it supposedly serves. It's not that these are bad guys out to screw us (although some certainly prosper obscenely while others suffer needlessly). The system just doesn't care what happens to the people who depend on it for their material needs and their livelihood. It only cares for itself, and it only rewards those who collaborate in prolonging its feeding frenzy.

Those who DO prosper in this grotesque game (or fancy themselves as being capable of doing so if they could only silence those who they blame for their own failures) are determined to do whatever it takes to continue this vulgar farce as long as they possibly can rather than face the consequences and shame of their own stupidity, greed and mismanagement.

Don't take my word for it. The apologists for the system have had complete control of it for almost a decade and their legacy is one of total economic disaster. It is now recognized that this economic crisis materialized in early 2007. Did any of them sound the alarm? No, they just made excuses and tried to tell us what a fine job they were doing and how fortunate we were that they were finally in charge.

Did ya miss me, Lindy?
