I fully acknowledge history is on the side of the GOP eventually regaining power. However, history could be wrong this time.

Some of the core ideas of the extreme right are so toxic to the economy and society that they could be compared to a tumor in the body of America. The tumor is unfortunately too big to cut out without killing the patient, but it can be shrunk. In fact what the GOP is now doing is giving itself chemo and radiation. Shrinking that malignancy.

The fiscally conservative but socially moderate wing of the party is hitting the road, and they are ending up either in the Democrat camp or are swelling the ranks of independents. If the the GOP doesn't move back toward the middle they will permanently lose these guys, and sooner or later they will form a third party.
