Nothing this man or his henchmen say can be taken at face value. He simply has too much to gain by lying and to much to lose from the truth if he is indeed guilty of the charges against him. If he is indeed, no one will believe him without corroborating evidence. The only way we're going to get to the bottom of this is an investigation, even if it means all participants have to be granted immunity from prosecution in order to get at the truth.
Obama wants to make this all go away, knowing it will only lead to political warfare and distract from his domestic agenda, and for a while I agreed with that point of view. But it's clear that Cheney's maneuvering sure looks like a smokescreen for the rest of the iceberg, if you don't mind me mixing my metaphors. He reeks of the self-righteous indignation of the justly persecuted. I do not want to see this become another JFK assassination, with its resulting conspiracy theories and endless speculations.
Conservatives are going to just have to bite the bullet and maybe see their boys go down hard for this, even if only in the court of public opinion; or conversely, liberals are going to have to put up or shut up and turn up some real evidence or forever hold their peace. And if they can't do that, they deserve to take the heat for it. But we simply cannot do nothing, or it willl never go away.
