The simple hedge
at least if your institution makes it available to you. At my credit union, if I write an insufficient check, a transfer is automatically made out of my savings account. If that is depleted the transfer comes out of my VISA line of credit.
There is some limit to the number of transfers you get in a month before they start applying charges but I've never exceeded it.
It's real peace of mind.
Now that doesn't diminish at all the shady practices banks have adopted.
