My experience with the IRS went pretty well.
I had some gifts, some deductions and some losses I didn't know how to handle and put off dealing with. I wound up several years behind, lost some sleep, went down and talked with them.
They filled out the returns, gave me every break imaginable, waived fines, and we got it all done. I have to say in my case on that occasion they were quite decent.
