I was pointing out the huge assumption underlying Tom's arguments. We all know that it's an article of faith among rightwingers that everything the government touches turns to shit. Well, except for the military. So I pointed out the blind spot and filled it with facts.
A corrollary to that is the certainty that the only way that the government could do a good job is to not actually do a good job, but to hobble the competition so that the government looks better by comparison. I can see why you'd reach for that familiar tune, it being close at hand from being overused as the right's basic attack strategy. But if the first is a falsehood, the second is too; both are just the assumptions of rightwing ideologues, and the market for rightwing assumptions is stone cold dead these days.
