I think you've underestimated the ability of the Democrats to shoot themselves in the foot. Repeatedly.

As disorganized and divided as the Republicans are now is the natural condition of the Democratic Party. Once the Republicans detoxify themselves of the Neocons, they will quickly become a formidable force again.
