"progressive" isn't any more accurate than "liberal."

A major effort has been made over the years for those with a collectivist/authoritarian philosophy to annihilate the terminology to the point where the labels themselves become useless. Once you've destroyed the language in which something is discussed, you can't discuss it. This was the idea behind "newspeak."

This article comments on how the term "socialism" has been deconstructed. If you talk about Marxism, people will seriously tell you there aren't any Marxists in the United States at all.

Now you pretty much have to say "people who believe that a very powerful central government should control and/or own every important aspect of an economy."

Given recent events, you could probably insert "central government controlled by a single party," since not one Democrat seems to be at all bothered with the idea of the Republicans either fading away entirely, or being replaced by a "moderate" Republican Party, i.e. one that agrees with Democratic policies in every important area.

You can't even crack out a decent acronym from all that. If you use the term "socialist," "collectivist," or "statist," the socialist/collectivist/statist you're arguing with will act exactly like there aren't any such words in the language.
