The best way to cover up a real conspiracy is to start a conspiracy theory.
No hard evidence of UFOs: sure, the government has classified it.
Gas costs too much: sure, the auto companies are covering up the water-burning engine.
No WMDs: well, they were trying real hard to get some.
The world doesn't agree with your politics: of course, there is a conspiracy of journalists and entertainers working hard to subvert our thinking through propaganda.
THe truth is that when we set up a regulatory structure to combat global warming it WILL be infiltrated by people and organizations (and companies!) determined to make it profitable for themselves, just like the present industrial system is run by individuals and companies determined to prosper by the way things are now. That's the way the world works, people and groups work to better themselves, there is no conspiracy, there is only self-interest and self-deception.
And it isn't necessarily evil, either. People naturally make excuses to convince themselves that what is good for them is also best for everyone. We need people and organizations and governments to work together and, if necessary, compete and conflict and hope that some compromise will result that helps us to muddle through.
The world and history are not conspiracies, they are a process.
