They love to have monster pistols when a rifle or shotgun is what's really required.

The only two calibers really needed for a personal defense sidearm are .45 ACP and 9mm Parabellum, the former for home defense or hunting backup, and the latter for police work, where the bigger mag capacity is worth giving up some stopping power.

The only application for .44 Magnum I can think of is so you can have ammo for a carbine interchangeable with your revolver in an emergency or survival situation, although I would keep the latter loaded with 44 Special so it would be a bit more manageable. I've often considered this combination suitable armament for a yacht.
