We must not make promises we can't keep,

or threats we can't back up. To egg on, then betray, our friends just to embarass our enemies and put them on the spot is criminal.

It is possible to publicly condemn tyrants without raising false hopes to the oppressed that only serve our own ends. To fail to do that simply to maintain a possible bargaining chip with the tyrants is a failure of principle and morality. It is right to to criticize the Obama administration for this, and I believe that criticism, from both the Republicans and his own party, has resulted in a quick change of policy for the better. The administration deserves credit for making that policy change just as it deserved censure for not doing it immediately, from the start. But it is irresponsible to go any further than that just to get in a cheap shot at the mullahs.

I remember hearing recordings of desperate radio messages from Hungary begging for the "promised" NATO paratroopers that would stop the Russian tanks. And I've heard eyewitnesses of the Bay of Pigs days explain how they expected the Americans to intervene at any moment, but they never came. They were never even considered. This must never happen again.
