It's a Grundig Eton G4000A portable with all the AM, FM, amateur, aviation, marine, CB, SSB and shortwave bands, all packed into an AC/DC package the size of a Gideon's Bible. A lot of that stuff's available on the Net now, or satellite radio (including the Voice of Iran) but I like the idea of complete independence from the grid. As long as I've got AA dry cells or 115V AC, I have the world.
Still, SW ain't what it used to be, huddled around late at night with the headphones on, tuning in Radio Moscow or Fidel out of the ether with my Zenith Transoceanic. Now its mostly muzak, futbol, Christian yahoos in the Deep South broadcasting in Spanish, and even the propaganda broadcasts are more straight news. In a way, blatant propaganda reveals more about the disseminator that it conceals, and the perpetrators are getting hip.
VOI was a refreshing throwback to the Cold War.
