The Voice of Iran

I just finished listening to it, straight from the horse's mouth, 0130-0230 UT at 7235 and 9495 KHz. The show is slickly produced, with male and female American-accented voices, and a musical bacground that runs the gamut from the muezzin calling the faithful to prayer, to elevator music, to Eurotechnopop.

You'd never guess from hearing it that there was fighting in the streets over there, the only mention of the election is how it frustrated the Anglo-American Zionist agenda (with the usual reference to the Mossadegh-Shah CIA coup 50 years ago, and how the Supreme Leader congratulated the clear winner Amadinajed in front of a vast crowd of supporters. Obama and the US Congress were blasted for anti-Iranian activities, although it was not too clear what those activities were. I presume they were the condemnations of the suppression of the demonstrations today.

The bulk of the program was American news, including Guantanamo (including an interview with some American lawyer, but with no mention of the elections) and other items, like the economy, the Obama health initiative, the Afghanistan/Pakistan aerial bombings, etc. It's hard to follow because the signal fades in and out and is garbled on my little portable Yacht Boy, but it sounded fairly accurate factwise, (although definitely with an anti-USA slant).

Actually, it's pretty bad propaganda, more suitable to the middle of the last century than the beginning of this one. With communications as fast and widespread as they are today, tying to cover things up is simply counter productive. They would have been better off covering the demonstrations and unrest in depth, so that at least no one would accuse them of deliberately lying. In fact, the best way to get people to believe your propaganda is to be as honest as possible when you have no choice. That way, people will trust you when you can lie.
