but every job now routinely done by illegals used to be done by Americans within my memory. I've worked construction, factory work, yard work and road crew, even domestic work, in fact, everything except agricultural worker, and I had friends who did that, picking fruit in the groves and produce in harvest season.
Americans didn't get lazy overnight, as if struck by some L-ray from outer space. They have simply been crowded out of these jobs by conditions and salaries that have evolved to the point where only the desperate will take them. Likewise, foreign workers didn't just walk across the border and ask someone for a job. There was a system that arose to manage them, with middlemen and jobbers, labor contractors, and services for these people, such as housing and transport. This took investment (mostly from the aliens themselves) but it took time to develop and put in place.
Immigrants come here for the same reason our forefathers came here. To see if they could get work, because they heard there was work. Very few Americans descended from the passengers of the Mayflower or fought in the Revolutionary War. We were all aliens, once.
Yes, there are valid economic reasons why this has happened, but if we feel the need to create villains, we should remember they are American, not alien.
