There was a science fiction story from the 1950s about astronauts
finding a highly intelligent alien on an asteroid that could, would, and
did answer any question put to it.
Humanity became collectively more advanced, richer, and powerful as
a result. However, the alien pointed out that by it giving the humans
the direct answers they sought instead of letting them do the work
and research to get the answers on their own, they missed a lot of
other potential answers to questions they didn't even know about had
they tried to get the information by their own methods.
This is the one thing that concerns me about getting answers so easily,
that we may miss other things along the way that could be just as
interesting and important if not moreso. And when you can get an
answer to a question so easily, where is the incentive to think and work
harder? Enough people already believe what they are shown and told on
the Internet and television, so being given easy answers without having
to work for them or even verify it is not going to help.
Or am I just an old cranky guy who had to walk 20 miles uphill in a snow
storm both ways to school every day and I liked it that way?
