Here's exactly what Zelaya wanted to ask the Honduran people

Ud Piensa que debe haber una cuarta urna de votacion para decidir si debe haber una Asamblea Constiuyente Nacional para aprobar una nueva constitucion? Si o No

Do you think that the general elections should include a fourth ballot box in order to make a decision about the creation of a National Constitutional Assembly that would approve a new Constitution?" Yes or No.

That's it. A simple non-binding public consultation. It wouldn't force a new Constitution into place and it couldn't possibly have extended Zelaya's term in office - he would have been long gone by the time a National Constitutional Assembly could possibly meet, and decide to make any changes in eligibility for candidates to the Presidency.

Zelaya didn't make an illegal grab for power - he even invoked article 5 of the Honduran “Civil Participation Act” of 2006, under which all public functionaries can perform non-binding public consultations to inquire what the population thinks about policy measures.

Why on earth did members of the political and military elite get so severely bent out of shape, and overreact in such a barbaric preemptive strike? Why are they so desparate to prevent the Honduran people from expressing themselves, even in a non-binding manner? That's an excellent question. I suspect the real reasons are found in the directions Zelaya was moving the country in economic terms, and in questioning trade agreements that benefited the ruling elite class in Honduras. Zelaya was a thorn in their side, so they simply got rid of him.
