Did some poking around and can't quite figure out how the plan is supposed to work. All I got was that participation in an insurance plan will be mandatory. You will be fined via your tax return if you don't have insurance. Isn't that the "Hillary plan"?
The republicans came up with a nifty flow chart that is a database designers nightmare. "Baffling" indeed.
There was an eye-opening interview on Bill Moyers with Trudy Lieberman, director of the health and medical reporting program at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, and Marcia Angell, senior lecturer in social medicine at Harvard Medical School and former editor in chief of the New England Journal of Medicine
Angell tried to make a point that the 80 billion dollars offered by the Pharmaceutical companies is intended for only brand name drugs, "So, in a sense, it's a subsidy for the most expensive drugs".
So, should the 80 billion be applied to the $4 prescription generic drugs at Wal-Mart?
Although I understand and share some of Angell's views, there should be no doubt that the plan doesn't go far enough for her socialist aspirations. One of her phrases;
"If we continue to spend what we do, right now, on health care, but had a system that distributed it according to medical need, there would be no rationing."
"According to need"- sound familiar? She also spoke about "profit" as though she had a mouthful of alum.
But in our economic model, Businesses profit by supplying desirable goods and services at a fair price, and the price is kept fair through competition. Consumers are free to chose which goods and services they want to buy and from which businesses they want to deal with. I challenge anyone to apply the model to our current health care industry. It has elements of capitalism but it has mutated into something that's hard to recognize. It's a tumor. Do we ignore it and let it grow, "let the market take care of it" like some conservatives suggest, or do we treat it aggressively. Do we know how to treat it. I think most of us are asking "will the cure really be worse than the disease."?
It's hard to tell until we understand the course of action.
Figure out the health care plan yet?
