Reality is the lethal enemy of leftist ideology. Elections can be won based on rhetoric, impressions, emotions, and a lot of other things that don't involve a lot of forebrain activity. Actually making things work is another matter.
There's a limit to how much legislators can slide things behind the public's back, which is the sole reason for the screaming hurry on so much recent legislation and the complete discarding of all the "transparency" promises. Thank God we have much broader information sources than we used to.
