IMHO, unmanned probes are MUCH more effective per dollar than manned probes.

Machines don't eat, drink, eliminate, breathe, etc, etc. Therefore, they require no life support systems.

Machines don't need to be brought back home.
Therefore, they require no huge additional payload of a return rocket.

Machines don't need costly safety precautions.
Therefore, they are much cheaper.

I just don't see ANY need for manned space probes in the foreseeable future.
