...I've walked out the door at Fry's holding my receipt in the air and absolutely refusing to stop to have it checked. I was hassled a couple of times in the early days, but a very loud "Are you accusing me of shoplifting???" quieted it down right quick. They try to intimidate people into compliance, but usually the goons know the law and know that insisting on searching somebody's packages is the fast track to a wrongful detention or false arrest charge (if they're security guards), assault and battery, and many other kinds of hells.
And I always smugly reminded myself of Techie's Mirror Principle, and what Fry's projection of the honesty of their customers says about them. For many years they held the top spot in number of complaints to the DA.
