It was the tour promoting his first eponymous album "Ted Nugent", it had come out to excellent reviews and my friends were all raving about it. Nugent did not disappoint on stage, he is a terrific musician and showman, and his backup band was first-rate. I was impressed by how faithful the live performance was to the recording. It wasn't all about engineering and production. That album still makes my top ten list, although nothing he has done since has particularly impressed me.
I did notice one thing though that disturbed me at the time, and which relates to the points you bring up. Periodically during the performance, he would rush out to the wings of the stage, stick his head behind a curtain, and make exaggerated (amplified) snorting and sniffing noises, as if he were inhaling massive lines of coke. His between-song commentary was also laced with drug references and double entendres, much to the delight of the crowd. I doubt if he was actually doing drugs on stage, I suspect it was an act done to elicit applause and approval from the audience, but the point is that this same man who makes such a big public deal about a wholesome outdoor, drug free lifestyle had no problems mimicking the behavior to generate cheers from the stoner audience.
I must add, during the concert, or for years afterward, I was not aware of any public expression of his right wing political views. Presumably, he kept those to himself until they became more publicly acceptable.
