We have been given a voice too, Rob.

One that was not elected by a scared, ignorant and angry minority with an Electoral technicality. And one that speaks in the same tone and anger as the voice you chose. We have a swamp that needs draining too, and we are faced with a "failing" nation. Yes, the level of discourse is shrill and harsh, but can you really believe it is not in response to more of the same? Republicans have gloried in their bully-boy tough guy, since long before he was elected. And now you are reaping the whirlwind. You weren't "given a voice", you hired an enforcer, and now he's out of control and you're ashamed (or afraid) to admit it. Now do you see why we keep on pointing to NAZI as the model and inspiration for MAGA?

As I have tried to point out many times, Trump's outrages and excesses are his personal shortcomings, not those of his political ideology. He might just as easily have been a Democrat, or a Liberal. However, those who have supported him and ignored his crimes and insults are doing so for personal reasons, for their own power and money and cultural interests. They have allowed themselves to be used in order to get their way. They do not deserve the reasoned discourse and respect they so glibly have denied to others. This includes those responsible and thoughtful Conservatives that bravely and publicly opposed Trumpism and have been rewarded BY THEIR OWN PARTY with ostracism, insult, hatred and Primary ruin.

The Republican Party has shamefully prostituted itself. It has sold its soul. It has betrayed its country and human decency for a corporate tax cut, the dismantling of regulations that protect the worker, consumer, and environment, and the denial of medical care to the poor. And now it is systematically undermining the Republic itself by using its majority to overwhelm the checks and balances that keep all excesses, from all political ideologies, under control.

The Conservative movement has disgraced itself--not for what it believes, there is still much of value in its program. It has soiled itself by what it has demonstrated it was willing to do to the rest of us to get its way. It is now time for it to publicly accept responsibility for its actions.
