My early work as a grad student was on ultrafast lasers, where the laser pulses are measured in femtoseconds (femtosecond is 1 millionth of a billionth of a second) they are now working on attosecond pulses 1000 times shorter than femtosecond....
Ultrashort lasers can be used to take 'snapshots' of processes that take place over very short time-scales, and interact with matter in very different ways than longer pulsed more traditional lasers.
