What we were saying was you should be ashamed of being a fascist.
And what the Conservatives were saying was that if you weren't fascist you weren't American.
Remember, the problem is NOT Trump. Every now and then someone like Trump comes along, on the Right or the Left. The real problem is the people who have continued to follow him in spite of the abundant evidence that he was a grotesque bully and buffoon. But those folks will eventually see the light. What really breaks my heart is all those people who know exactly who Trump is and what he stands for, and despise him for it, but still support him because he promises to further their agenda. Those are the ones who need to be ashamed.
Remember what the German Right said about Hitler? "Yes, he's a fool and an extremist, but he'll get rid of the Communists, crush the labor unions, and bring back law and order. But we'll be able to control him."
No one ever said you should be ashamed of being an American.
