An isolated observation from a perceptive foreigner...
When my cousin Rudy came from Cuba in 1961, at age 16, he came with me to homeroom class at Brandon High School, a rural school in a Cracker Tampa suburb.
He understood just enough English to pick up on "The Pledge of Allegiance" we recited in unison before class (just before our (mandatory) Protestant prayer.
He told me later; "You know, my parents shipped me out of Cuba so I wouldn't have to be indoctrinated by just this kind of political bullshit."
