Honestly Curious

Who in the media was telling you to be ashamed of being an American? CNN? Any of the others? You say it was constant.

Was it that we should all be ashamed of America? Because America has done some shitty things. But hopefully, together, we can atone for those and get better.

But you, specifically? Because I never got that from the media in all my life. Yeah, I'm white, male, pretty well off, heterosexual. I've never, ever, thought that I should be ashamed of that. Or that others in the media were telling me that I should. Recent decades have brought increasing awareness of how others in this country are not granted the same rights of the American Dream, but that never brought me shame of being an American. It encouraged me to focus on what this country's principles are, and how we can fulfill them.

If anything, while spending time in the deep red South, I kept my mouth shut for being a centrist liberal, just to keep the peace at cocktail parties or social functions.

I'm not harping on you, mate. I'm trying to understand the social dynamic of propaganda - from both sides. Who (or what) made you feel you should be ashamed to be an American?
