It may be a bit too early yet to declare that technology is going to make that much difference. For all we know it's just a passing fad. The very idea of "The March of Progress" itself is soooo 19th century...
Much more potentially disturbing may be the decline of the nation-state, and its eventual replacement by the multinational corporation.
Your "new player" idea fills me with skepticism too. I don't see a McLuhanesque Global Village in our future, I just see yet another marketing tool. The internet is going the same way as television. It was going to change the world, bring culture and education, freedom and empowerment to the masses, usher in the new millennium. Now its just a way to sell bandwidth to advertisers.
It would be a mistake to see the future as just a re-run of the past, I think of it more as just a bad sequel.
