Its a lot easier than that. The reason we can't afford a home is that the "free market" is fucking over the working man. For builders and sellers and renters and landlords dealing with wealthy people is more profitable than providing housing to the poor. Of course, the dividing line between "wealthy" and "poor" is constantly being adjusted to maximize profits.
Don't blame the blacks or the Jews or the immigrants if you just got layed off, or if your job went overseas. Blame your boss. He's the one who hires and fires people, not the Passport Office.

These are complex issues, with complex, overlapping causes and ripples and internal reflections. Yes, there are good guys, AND bad buys, and lots of stupid, greedy people. But beware the guy with all the easy, obvious answers. Not only is he telling you just what you want to hear, he's usually covering up for someone else, as well.
