Current Events » in reply to When I was growing up there were entire subdivisions of new, small 3 bedroom "starter homes".

I was brought up in a place like that: "Clair-Mel City"

Look it up. Its in Wikipedia.

Cheap, government-subsidized (no down payment) housing, but a big step up from the run-down rentals we lived in previously, and the urban government housing projects we lived in prior to that. Yeah, I'm a "Project Rat" and proud of it.

My mother was a widow, she worked as a stenographer, and her 20 year mortgage payment was equivalent to one week's pay out of each month's salary. What's it up to now, about 30-40%? Eventually I was able to finish college (The State-subsidized University of South Florida) with her help, my own outside work, and the GI Bill. I did not need to go into debt, or get a scholarship. Later on, I was able to pay for my own Master's degree at USF from my salary at a blue-collar job, while being otherwise fully self-supporting.

I don't think you're going to see anything like that today. Nowadays, if you're born poor, you stay poor.
