I think I have the answer

I logged on from my laptop tonight and saw that I had the same problem. Chat defaulted to the top.

Shortly after I was notified by auto update that MS wanted to install IE8 on my laptop. Being agreeable I said okay. Afterward I logged back on and voila chat was at the last message.

I'll bet your wife has IE8 and your pc is still using 7
