Other people are having the same problem. You're probably right about the browser version- at least with IE.
The IE8 "compatibility view" emulates previous browsers. Updating their browsers to the current version might be the answer- like you said.
I know ER had the same minichat issue but I don't know which browser he's using.
But since people seem afraid to use this new feature- it may be a non-issue. It is awkard at times...
