And use that as your starting page. You can set your preferences there, avatar, country, etc. You've a message system, and a private file directory for you to store your files. (so far that is completely your own...it cannot be linked to, as far as my experiments have determined.) IT will also show you all the posts you have made.
As far as building points, posting actually doesn't produce many points. Again, this is based on my own experiments, the Help section, unless I missed it, doesn't go into the points system.
Are you seeing any side menues at all? Mayhaps you are stuck in full screen mode. Do you have a fullscreen icon in the upper right of your view? If so, click it.
