I am a tree hugger in my own way and I hate to see reports of trees dying en masse.
The Dutch Elm is another problem that has has been going on for many years and is probably more attributable to human error than this.
What ever can be done should be done, (plantings as podrock suggests).
Climate change is reality, how we fit in is another question.
